Key Individual Networks - UK Community Engagement



Description:

The issue of community consultation was raised at the Spring OALEP Symposium with an emphasis on local representation and more frequent engagement with the public and other community partners. I can offer the following support from the Metropolitan Police London, Greater Manchester Police Bolton, and the Derbyshire Police in England from their Safer Neighbourhoods program (Neighbourhood Officers). Attached are a summary of ‘Key Individual Networks’ or KIN for short, as well as supporting documentation.

From my experience in London, we used KIN’s for several purposes including consultation, acquiring community intelligence for strategic and tactical planning purposes, and for measuring the performance of our neighbourhood program and individual officers. They serve as an enabler for gathering information from the community which is more reflective of local concerns and available more frequently than relying on 3 year strategic surveys or ad hoc section based efforts.
